Recently, natural desiccated thyroid has become difficult to obtain. Manufactured products such as Armour Thyroid, Nature-Throid, and Westhroid have become scarce, to unavailable throughout the country. If you are experiencing difficulty obtaining natural desiccated thyroid, a compounding pharmacy may be able to assist you.
Prescription compounding improves peoples' health, by making medicine easier to take. Compounding allows specially trained pharmacists to "custom make" medications for an individual patient (human or animal), based on that patient's unique needs and symptoms. Most compounding pharmacies are independently owned, and most chain pharmacies do not compound.
A compounding pharmacist uses raw chemicals, powders, liquids and special equipment to make medications. This results in a customized medication made by a pharmacist, according to a doctor's directions, to meet an individual patient need.
Compounding is fundamental to the profession of pharmacy, and pharmacists are the only health care professionals that have studied chemical compatibilities and who can prepare alternate dosage forms.
If you would like to find out if a compounding pharmacist can assist you during this stressful time, consider doing the following:
- Go to the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists' website and search for a compounding pharmacy near you.
- Contact your local compounding pharmacy and ask if they are able to assist you.
- If they are, you will probably need to have a new prescription written for you by your medical provider. An example of how a licensed medical prescriber might write for a compounded prescription can be found here.
- If they are not, Bayview Pharmacy may be able to assist you.
Compounding pharmacies are an extremely valuable resource, not only during times like these, but for any health care issue where treatment strategies need the assistance of a highly skilled, professional, pharmacist.
P.S. - Log onto Facebook and join thousands of individuals who are discussing natural desiccated thyroid treatments by searching for the group "Save Natural Thyroid".
