Hemorrhoids refers to a condition in which the veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed.  Hemorrhoids may result from straining to move stool, pregnancy, aging, or chronic constipation. The condition can be either internal (affecting veins inside the anus or lower rectum) or external (affecting veins outside the anus). Hemorrhoids affect both men and women.  About half the population will suffer from the condition by age 50.

There are several common treatment strategies, but most only offer modest relief or are unappealing.  Over the counter medications may be appropriate for hemorrhoids that cause mild discomfort, but they are rarely effective for more advanced cases.  Procedures such as rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy (injection), hemorrhoidectomy, and stapling may be effective, however they can also be unpleasant and uncomfortable, time consuming, and/or expensive.  These options leave most people wanting, and unnecessarily suffering.
