How Does it Work
Atropine 0.01% Ophthalmic Drops is a widely used and effective treatment for Myopia, or near-sightedness. The active ingredient in the drops is Atropine, a naturally occurring alkaloid discovered in plants of the nightshade family. Atropine works by decreasing the constriction of the pupil, thus allowing more light to enter the eye. This is important in Myopia because it allows the eye to focus light on a point behind the retina instead of in front, thus correcting the near-sightedness. In addition, atropine 0.01% Ophthalmic Drops can reduce the risk of developing complications, such as amblyopia, which can result from long-term Myopia when left untreated.
Atropine 0.01% Ophthalmic Drops are typically administered via a few drops into the eye for up to seven days. The effects of the drop can take several days to take full effect, so it is important to ensure the patient is compliant with the regimen and receiving regular follow-up exams. The most common side effects include dry eyes, redness of the eyes, blurred vision, and light sensitivity. In addition, administration of atropine should be avoided in glaucoma, as there is evidence that the drug can worsen the condition. Patients should be monitored carefully for any side effects or signs of worsening glaucoma and should be counseled on the potential risks of using atropine in this condition.
Other Uses
Atropine 0.01% Ophthalmic drops can also be used to treat other conditions such as allergic conjunctivitis, bacterial conjunctivitis, keratitis, and blepharitis. In addition, it can also be used to reduce pre-operative pupillary mydriasis and as a cycloplegic for the treatment of cycloplegic refraction, cycloplegic retinoscopy, and the treatment of posterior synechiae. Due to its ability to reduce accommodation, it can also be used as adjunctive therapy in the management of accommodative esotropia and accommodative spasm. Finally, this formulation of Atropine can be used to reduce the frequency of accommodative and convergence spasms.
