Formula Information
Atropine 0.02% Ophthalmic Drops are a topical formulation used to treat myopia in adults due to an increased curvature of the eye. This formulation acts as an antagonist to the natural acetylcholine that is produced in the eye, thus reducing the muscle tone in the eye and, ultimately, treating myopia. Atropine 0.02% Ophthalmic Drops should be used one to two times a day, no more than eight times a week. Patients should be aware of possible side effects such as blurred vision, temporary visual disturbances, and mild irritation of the eyes. How Does it Work
Atropine 0.02% Ophthalmic Drops are used to treat myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness. Myopia is a refractive error of the eye, caused by the eye’s inability to focus light directly on the retina. In myopia, the eyeball is too long for its optical power, and light focuses in front of the retina rather than directly on it. By relaxing the ciliary muscles of the eye, Atropine Ophthalmic Drops allow more light to enter the retina and provide more focused vision.
Atropine is a type of parasympatholytic, meaning it slows down the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system. When the ciliary muscles of the eye, which control the size of the pupil, are relaxed by Atropine, they are unable to constrict and allow more light to enter the eye. This decreases the amount of focusing power needed to see distant objects, allowing the eye to focus more easily.
Atropine 0.02% Ophthalmic Drops are administered as a single drop applied to the conjunctiva of the affected eye(s) either daily or every other day, depending on the doctor’s directions. When used as prescribed by a doctor, Atropine Ophthalmic Drops can be an effective treatment for myopia.
Other Uses
Atropine 0.02% Ophthalmic Drops can be used to treat a wide variety of ophthalmic conditions, including accommodative esotropia, accommodative esophoria, convergence insufficiency, and cycloplegia, as well as increased intraocular pressure and mydriasis. In addition, it can also be used as an adjuvant therapy to improve the success rate of refractive surgery, such as photorefractive keratectomy and LASIK. This formulation can also be used for diagnostic pupillary dilation and for treating decreased sensitivity to light, astigmatism, and nearsightedness. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties of atropine may be used to reduce the risk of infection in cases of ocular trauma, corneal ulcerations, and conjunctivitis.
