How Does it Work

Atropine 0.05% Ophthalmic Drops are a topical agent used for the treatment of myopia. Myopia, or nearsightedness, occurs when the eye is unable to focus clearly on distant objects. Atropine 0.05% Ophthalmic Drops works by relaxing the focusing muscles of the eye, allowing light to spread out evenly over the back of the eye, which in turn helps reduce myopic refractive errors. Atropine 0.05% Ophthalmic Drops are administered once a day for a period of two weeks and then stopped for two weeks before being resumed. The effectiveness of Atropine 0.05% Ophthalmic Drops has been found to be greatest in patients younger than 18 years of age, with a marked decrease in myopia progression, especially in the first four to six weeks after initial treatment. Due to its reversible action, Atropine 0.05% Ophthalmic Drops can be used as a long-term therapy and side effects are typically mild and reversible. Common side effects may include burning, redness and discomfort in the eyes, headaches, and drooping of the eyelids. Since Atropine 0.05% Ophthalmic Drops may cause dilation of the pupil, patients may experience a decrease in sensitivity to light and may have difficulty focusing in bright lighting. It is important to note that Atropine 0.05% Ophthalmic Drops are not a one-time cure for myopia and their effectiveness may diminish over time. Therefore, your patient should be carefully monitored for any changes in vision and may need to be switched to a different course of treatment in the future.

Other Uses

Atropine 0.05% Ophthalmic Drops can also be used as a therapeutic treatment for cycloplegia, when the ciliary muscles of the eye become spastic and the pupil cannot accommodate to changing light conditions, as well as a prophylaxis for posterior synechiae, which is the adhesion of the lens and the iris that can lead to the formation of cataracts. Additionally, it can be prescribed to reduce the risk of developing amblyopia from eye alignment disorders, as well as to obtain a cycloplegic refraction that allows for a more accurate prescripion for corrective lenses.
