How Does it Work
Fluorouracil 5% topical gel is used to treat women with external genital herpes. This medication works by interfering with the virus’ ability to replicate. Fluorouracil blocks viral DNA synthesis. This helps to inhibit viral replication and reduce the number of recurrences. In addition, Fluorouracil may interfere with the virus’ ability to penetrate the cell wall, which may help to prevent the virus from becoming entrenched in the skin. The medication also has anti-inflammatory properties which may help to reduce symptoms and improve healing time. When applied as directed to the affected area, Fluorouracil has been shown to be an effective treatment for genital herpes. It is important to note that Fluorouracil should not be used inside the vagina or on open or bleeding lesions.
