How Does it Work

The topical gel works by targeting 5-HT3 receptors present in areas of the central nervous system and gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This action helps to reduce the feeling of nausea and vomiting by either blocking the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for stimulating the vomiting center in the brain, or by inhibiting its binding at 5-HT3 receptors. Ondansetron 20 mg/mL Topical Gel is generally well tolerated with minimal side effects and is not known to interact with other drugs. It is generally applied at the site of nausea, usually the upper abdomen, and is usually recommended for short-term use for up to six weeks. The gel comes in a single-use package and should be used no more than four times a day. To maximize effectiveness, the topical gel should be applied an hour before meals, or two hours after meals, as food can reduce its absorption. The gel should be applied thinly and without massage to ensure that the medication stays in place and releases gradually over a period of several hours. Additionally, when using the gel, a patient should avoid contact with the eyes as this could cause severe irritation and should always wash hands thoroughly after use.
