Liothyronine Sodium is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3), which plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and energy production in the body.
Liothyronine sodium is a synthetic form of the natural thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3).[1] Thyroid hormones control the way the body uses energy.[2] Liothyronine is FDA approved as replacement therapy in hypothyroidism,[1] a condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormones to meet the body's needs, with symptoms that can include fatigue, weight gain, and depression.[2]
Liothyronine has a rapid onset of action, occurring within a few hours, and a shorter duration of action than levothyroxine (T4).[1] Its labeling also includes TSH suppression in euthyroid goiters and thyroid nodules and use as a diagnostic suppression test. Myxedema coma is a medical emergency for which an intravenous liothyronine preparation is recommended.[1]

When prescribing liothyronine sodium, healthcare providers should consider potential interactions with other medications, including oral anticoagulants, insulin and other diabetes medicines, digitalis, and tricyclic antidepressants, as well as the patient's overall health status. Thyroid function, including TSH, is monitored to guide dosing, and excessive doses can cause signs of hyperthyroidism such as palpitations, nervousness, and sweating.[1]
