Clobetasol Propionate is a potent topical corticosteroid widely used in dermatology for its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties.
Clobetasol propionate is a super-high potency (class I) topical corticosteroid used in dermatology for its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties.[1][2] It is indicated for the relief of the inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, a group that includes conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and atopic dermatitis.[1][2] Because of its high potency, it is limited to short-term use, and FDA labeling limits treatment to 2 consecutive weeks.[1]
Topical corticosteroids are thought to act by inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, which control the release of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.[1] Clobetasol propionate is available in various formulations, including creams, ointments, gels, lotions, and foams, and the vehicle is chosen based on the application site and type of lesion.[1][2]
When prescribing clobetasol propionate, healthcare providers should consider the potential side effects, particularly with prolonged application. These may include skin atrophy, striae, and systemic absorption leading to hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression, which has been shown at doses as low as 2 g per day, and Cushing syndrome.[1][2] The label directs application of a thin layer and discontinuation when control has been achieved.[1] Use in pediatric patients under 12 years of age is not recommended.[1]
