Minoxidil is a vasodilator that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Minoxidil is a vasodilator used in the treatment of hair loss and hypertension.[1] Topical minoxidil is FDA-approved for androgenetic alopecia in adults 18 years and older; uses such as alopecia areata, chemotherapy-induced hair loss, and scarring alopecia are off-label.[1] In the scalp, the enzyme sulfotransferase converts minoxidil to its active form, which shortens the telogen (resting) phase and prompts dormant follicles to enter the anagen (growth) phase, extending the duration of hair growth and increasing hair thickness.[1]
Oral minoxidil is a vasodilator that opens ATP-sensitive potassium channels, reducing peripheral vascular resistance and lowering blood pressure.[1] It is reserved for resistant hypertension, in patients who have not responded to maximum doses of three different classes of antihypertensive drugs.[1] Serious adverse effects of oral minoxidil include fluid retention, tachycardia, and pericardial effusion that can progress to cardiac tamponade, and the oral product carries a boxed warning.[1] Low-dose oral minoxidil for pattern hair loss is an off-label use that has been studied in recent research.[1]
With topical use, hair regrowth becomes noticeable after about 8 weeks, with maximal effect around 4 months, and the benefits diminish when treatment is discontinued.[1] Topical adverse effects include scalp irritation, unwanted hair growth (hypertrichosis), and temporary shedding (telogen effluvium).[1] Bayview compounds minoxidil preparations, including combination preparations, on a prescriber's order.
