Azelaic Acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid used in topical skin products that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Azelaic Acid is a naturally occurring saturated dicarboxylic acid used in dermatology.[1] Topical azelaic acid is FDA-approved for mild to moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris and for the inflammatory papules and pustules of mild to moderate rosacea.[1][2] The exact mechanism is not known; in laboratory studies it shows antimicrobial activity against acne-associated bacteria, and it normalizes keratinization, which has an anticomedonal effect.[2] It also has anti-inflammatory activity.[3]
Azelaic acid competitively inhibits tyrosinase, a key enzyme in melanin production, which is the basis for its off-label use in hyperpigmentation such as melasma.[3] Topical 15% or 20% azelaic acid is generally well tolerated, with mainly mild, transient stinging, burning, itching, or dryness.[1][3] Isolated cases of hypopigmentation have been reported, so patients with darker skin should be monitored for early signs.[1][2]
