Dutasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Dutasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It is FDA approved for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate.[2] It is also prescribed off-label for androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss).[1] By inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), dutasteride lowers DHT, the androgen primarily responsible for prostate growth.[2]
In men with BPH, dutasteride is used to improve symptoms, reduce the risk of acute urinary retention, and reduce the risk of BPH-related surgery.[2] It inhibits both the type 1 and type 2 isoforms of 5-alpha-reductase.[2]
Dutasteride reduces serum DHT levels by more than 90%.[1] It has an elimination half-life of up to 5 weeks and takes approximately 3 to 6 months to reach steady-state concentrations.[1]
Prescribers should be aware of potential side effects, which may include sexual dysfunction such as impotence, decreased libido, and difficulty ejaculating, and the importance of monitoring patients for adverse reactions.[1] Bayview Pharmacy compounds dutasteride preparations on a prescriber's order.
