Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is a versatile and essential form of vitamin B3 that plays a crucial role in various biochemical processes within the body.
Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is a form of niacin (vitamin B3), one of the water-soluble B vitamins.[1] The body converts niacin into the coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), which more than 400 enzymes require and which helps transfer the energy in carbohydrates, fats, and proteins to ATP.[1]
In dermatology, nicotinamide has been studied for its anti-inflammatory properties as a treatment for acne. A 2017 literature review found that six of eight clinical trials of topical nicotinamide reported significant acne reduction versus baseline or results comparable to standard treatments, with no serious adverse effects documented, while noting that more studies are needed.[2]
Unlike nicotinic acid, niacinamide does not cause skin flushing.[1] Bayview compounds niacinamide into topical preparations on a prescriber's order.
