Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid (the drug form of cortisol) that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid, a steroid normally produced by the body, used for its anti-inflammatory and immune-modifying properties.[1] Topical hydrocortisone is used to relieve redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort of various skin conditions.[2] Topical corticosteroids as a class are used for conditions such as eczema, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis.[3] Hydrocortisone is also used systemically to replace cortisol when the body does not make enough, as in adrenal insufficiency.[1]
Among topical corticosteroids, hydrocortisone 1% and 2.5% are classed as least potent (class VII), which makes them suitable for sensitive areas, although they are less effective for severe conditions.[3]
Adverse effects of topical corticosteroids include skin atrophy, and systemic absorption is more likely with prolonged use, application over large areas, and occlusive dressings.[3] Hydrocortisone should be used under medical supervision. Topical hydrocortisone is available as ointment, cream, solution, spray, and lotion,[2] and oral hydrocortisone as tablets, oral solution, and sprinkle capsules.[1]
