Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid, a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide (glycosaminoglycan) widely distributed in the extracellular matrix of connective tissue and found in the skin, eyes, and synovium. Because hyaluronic acid is highly anionic, it attracts water, swelling to create volume and provide structural support.[1] FDA-labeled uses of hyaluronic acid products include surgical aids in ophthalmic procedures, intra-articular injection for knee osteoarthritis pain, and topical creams or gels for wound management.[1]
Its water-attracting property is the reason it is included in topical skin formulations. Hyaluronic acid is injected intra-articularly for pain relief in mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee; meta-analyses have shown varying results, with an overall consensus of small but significant symptomatic effects.[1]
In ophthalmology, hyaluronic acid is used as a surgical aid in cataract extraction, intraocular lens implantation, corneal transplant, and glaucoma filtration surgery. Hyaluronic acid theoretically should not cause an immune response. Topical hyaluronic acid creams and gels are labeled for the management of wounds and skin ulcers.[1]
