Clindamycin Hydrochloride is a lincosamide antibiotic that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Clindamycin hydrochloride is an antibiotic belonging to the lincosamide class. It works by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, and depending on the organism, infection site, and drug concentration it may be bacteriostatic or bactericidal.[1] It is active against many anaerobic bacteria and certain gram-positive cocci, including susceptible Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species.[1][2]
The FDA label for oral clindamycin hydrochloride states that its use should be reserved for penicillin-allergic patients or other patients for whom, in the judgment of the physician, a penicillin is inappropriate.[2] Clindamycin is used in both topical and systemic forms, for conditions such as acne, skin and soft tissue infections, and respiratory tract infections.[1][3] Oral clindamycin is rapidly absorbed, with absorption of about 90% of an oral dose, and is widely distributed in body fluids and tissues, including bone.[2]
Potential side effects include gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Clindamycin carries a boxed warning for Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD), which may range in severity from mild diarrhea to fatal colitis.[2] Clindamycin is metabolized mainly by the liver enzyme CYP3A4, so prescribers should review the patient's medical history and current medications to minimize the risk of adverse reactions and interactions.[2]
