Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic with activity against gram-positive bacteria, some gram-negative organisms, and atypical pathogens such as Chlamydia trachomatis.[1] It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 23S ribosomal RNA in the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, which stops bacterial growth.[1] Its labeled uses include respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis and chlamydia.[2]
Erythromycin can be given by oral, intravenous, topical, and ophthalmic routes, and it is effective for acne when mixed with tretinoin cream or benzoyl peroxide.[1] Bayview Pharmacy compounds erythromycin preparations, including topical preparations for acne, on a prescriber's order.
Prescribers should be aware of potential drug interactions and contraindications associated with erythromycin. It is a cytochrome P450 inhibitor, and it should not be combined with certain statins such as simvastatin and lovastatin because of the risk of myopathy.[1] Increased anticoagulant effects have been reported when erythromycin is used with oral anticoagulants.[2] Hepatic dysfunction, including hepatocellular or cholestatic hepatitis with or without jaundice, has been reported, and liver function tests require monitoring because of the potential for rare but serious hepatic failure.[1][2]
