Benzoyl Peroxide is an antimicrobial used in topical acne products that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Benzoyl Peroxide is a widely used topical active pharmaceutical ingredient with antibacterial and keratolytic properties, and a staple in dermatological treatment. It is available over the counter and as an FDA-approved prescription medication for acne vulgaris, where it works by killing Cutibacterium acnes, the bacterium associated with acne, and through mild keratolytic effects that help treat comedonal acne.[1]
As an oxidizing agent, Benzoyl Peroxide is converted to benzoic acid in the skin, releasing reactive oxygen species that oxidize bacterial proteins.[1] It is often used in combination with topical antibiotics or retinoids; combination therapy is more effective than either medication alone and helps prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.[1]
Benzoyl Peroxide can cause mild dryness, redness, and scaling, particularly at higher concentrations, and contact dermatitis has been reported in a small percentage of patients.[1] Prescribers should consider the concentration and formulation of Benzoyl Peroxide when weighing these effects.
