Clindamycin Phosphate is a lincosamide antibiotic that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Clindamycin phosphate is an antibiotic belonging to the lincosamide class. It works by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby slowing or stopping the growth of susceptible bacteria.[1][3] Clindamycin is active against many gram-positive cocci and anaerobic bacteria, and it is used in skin and soft tissue infections.[1]
In dermatology, clindamycin phosphate is used in topical products such as solutions, gels, lotions, and foams to treat acne vulgaris.[3][4] Clindamycin is active in vitro against most isolates of Propionibacterium acnes, although the FDA label notes that the clinical significance of this, and the mechanism of action in acne, are unknown.[4] MedlinePlus describes topical clindamycin as working by slowing or stopping the growth of bacteria that cause acne and by decreasing swelling.[3] Clindamycin phosphate is also the salt form used in injectable clindamycin.[1]
Systemically administered clindamycin is widely distributed in body fluids and tissues, including bone, while topical application produces very low serum levels.[2][4] Diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and colitis, including pseudomembranous colitis, have been reported with both topical and systemic clindamycin.[4] Healthcare providers should consider the patient's medical history and the potential for antibiotic resistance when prescribing clindamycin phosphate.
