Haloperidol is a potent antipsychotic medication primarily used to manage symptoms of schizophrenia and acute psychotic states.
Haloperidol is an antipsychotic medication used in the treatment of schizophrenia.[1] It is a first-generation (typical) antipsychotic that exerts its effects by blocking dopamine D2 receptors in the brain, which helps reduce symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and agitation.[1]
In addition to schizophrenia, haloperidol is FDA-approved for Tourette syndrome and severe behavioral disorders in children.[1] Off-label uses include agitation associated with psychiatric disorders, acute mania, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and intractable hiccups.[1] Haloperidol is available as oral tablets and concentrate, as haloperidol lactate for intramuscular injection, and as haloperidol decanoate for long-acting intramuscular injection.[1]
When prescribing haloperidol, it is crucial to consider potential side effects, which may include extrapyramidal symptoms, sedation, anticholinergic effects, and QT prolongation.[1] Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotics have an increased risk of death, and haloperidol is not approved for that use.[1] Haloperidol's interactions with other medications, including CYP3A4 and CYP2D6 inhibitors and inducers, should be carefully evaluated.[1]
