Fentanyl Citrate is an opioid analgesic and a Schedule II controlled substance that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Fentanyl citrate is the citrate salt of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid analgesic that is typically 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine.[1] Fentanyl is a mu-selective opioid agonist; opioid receptors are located in the brain within structures involved in the control of emotions and pain.[1]
Fentanyl is used for preoperative analgesia, as an adjunct to anesthesia, and for postoperative pain control, and its use for moderate to severe acute pain is off-label.[1] Oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate is used for breakthrough pain in cancer patients already receiving baseline opioid therapy, with a rapid onset of analgesia, peak effects at 20 to 40 minutes, and effects lasting 2 to 3 hours.[2] Its potency necessitates careful dosing and monitoring, because high plasma levels can lead to respiratory depression and death.[2]
