Ketamine Hydrochloride is an anesthetic (NMDA receptor antagonist) and a Schedule III controlled substance that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Ketamine hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt of ketamine, a nonbarbiturate dissociative anesthetic used in various compounded formulations.[1] It is FDA approved for general anesthesia, alone or with other agents, particularly for brief procedures.[1]
Ketamine has also been used off-label for severe pain and treatment-resistant depression, and its S-enantiomer, esketamine, is FDA approved for treatment-resistant depression in conjunction with an oral antidepressant.[1] Ketamine acts as a noncompetitive antagonist of glutamate at the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, and when given intravenously its onset of action is 1 minute or less.[2]
Ketamine requires careful administration and monitoring because of potential side effects. Emergence reactions, including confusion, hallucinations, and dysphoria, occur in approximately 6% to 12% of patients, and ketamine causes transient increases in blood pressure.[1] It also causes sympathetic stimulation that increases myocardial oxygen demand.[2]
