Diazepam is a benzodiazepine and a Schedule IV controlled substance that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Diazepam is a benzodiazepine used for its anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, and sedative properties. It works by binding to GABA-A receptors and enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that inhibits activity in the brain, leading to a calming effect on the nervous system.[2] It is used to treat anxiety disorders, as an adjunct for skeletal muscle spasm, and as an adjunct in seizure (convulsive) disorders.[1][2]
Diazepam is also used in the management of acute alcohol withdrawal and for relief of preoperative anxiety.[1][2] Oral diazepam is well absorbed, reaching peak plasma levels in 1 to 1.5 hours, and it has a long elimination half-life of up to about 48 hours, with an active metabolite, desmethyldiazepam, whose half-life is up to about 100 hours.[1][2] It is available commercially as oral tablets, injections, and rectal gel.[2]
Common side effects include drowsiness, fatigue, muscle weakness, and ataxia.[1] Diazepam carries boxed warnings: use with opioids may result in profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death; benzodiazepine use exposes users to risks of abuse, misuse, and addiction; and continued use may lead to clinically significant physical dependence, and abrupt discontinuation or rapid dosage reduction may precipitate acute withdrawal reactions, which can be life-threatening.[1] These risks call for careful monitoring and dosage adjustments.

Yes. Diazepam is a Schedule IV controlled substance and the benzodiazepine boxed warnings apply. Taken with opioids it can cause profound sedation, life-threatening respiratory depression, coma, and death. Abuse, misuse, and addiction are risks, and continued use can cause physical dependence, so stopping abruptly can cause withdrawal including seizures. Do not stop on your own; ask your prescriber about tapering. Versions with ketamine are Schedule III. Baclofen-only suppositories are not controlled.
