Lorazepam is a potent benzodiazepine used primarily for its anxiolytic, sedative, and anticonvulsant properties.
Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine medication with anxiolytic, sedative, and anticonvulsant uses.[2] FDA-approved uses include short-term relief of anxiety symptoms associated with anxiety disorders, anxiety-related insomnia, and treatment of status epilepticus.[1] Lorazepam binds to benzodiazepine receptors on GABA-A ligand-gated chloride channels and enhances the inhibitory effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that reduces brain activity.[1]
Lorazepam has a rapid onset when given intravenously (about 1 to 3 minutes) and an elimination half-life of about 14 hours, which places it among the intermediate-acting benzodiazepines.[1] It is also approved as anesthesia premedication in adults to relieve anxiety or to induce sedation or amnesia.[1] Bayview compounds lorazepam preparations on a prescriber's order.
Prescribers should be aware that patients may develop dependence and tolerance with prolonged use, and that stopping lorazepam abruptly can cause withdrawal symptoms, so discontinuation is typically tapered.[1][2] Lorazepam carries a boxed warning that concurrent use of benzodiazepines with opioids can result in sedation, severe respiratory depression, coma, and death, so concurrent central nervous system depressants need careful consideration.[1]

We make no absorption or efficacy claim for it. A published pharmacokinetic study found lorazepam and haloperidol undetectable in plasma after topical application of an ABH-type gel, so the evidence does not support systemic delivery by that route.
