How Does it Work

Ibuprofen 20% Topical Lipoderm is a medication designed to treat women's health pelvic pain (external) that is applied to the affected area. It is composed of a 20% weight/volume ibuprofen in a lipid-based carrier which can be spread evenly over the affected area. The active ingredient, ibuprofen, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and is known to provide relief from pain and inflammation. The lipid-based carrier allows for a slow diffusion of the drug which further increases its effectiveness in providing relief over an extended period of time. The topical ibuprofen is known to reduce an inflammation-induced increase in pelvic pain and reduce localized edema. It also works to inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase enzymes which are known to form prostaglandins and leukotrienes, two compounds responsible for the onset of pain and inflammation. By inhibiting these compounds, the medication is able to reduce inflammation and related pain. Ibuprofen 20% Topical Lipoderm typically takes around 5 minutes to apply and is used to provide immediate and long-term relief from pelvic pain associated with women's health issues. Adverse side effects are rare but may include local skin irritation and discomfort, itchiness, burning, and redness. It is important to note that this medication is only meant for external use, and should not be ingested.

Other Uses

Ibuprofen 20% Topical Lipoderm can be used to address pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, especially in those instances where systemic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are contraindicated or are not providing adequate relief. The topical delivery of Ibuprofen allows physicians to measure patient response easily and accurately, and the concentrations provided by Lipoderm allow for much higher levels of ibuprofen in a localized area, thus allowing the physician to tailor treatment to the individual patient. Ibuprofen 20% Topical Lipoderm can also serve as a useful adjunct to other, more systemic treatments, allowing the patient to experience faster, more effective pain relief. Finally, because of its topical application, Ibuprofen 20% Topical Lipoderm can be easily combined with other topical treatments in order to provide a more comprehensive approach to pain management.
