Amphotericin B is an antifungal agent primarily indicated for progressive and potentially life-threatening fungal infections.[1] It belongs to the polyene class of antifungals and works by binding to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, forming ion channels and increasing membrane permeability, which leads to fungal cell death.[1] FDA-approved indications include infections caused by Candida, Aspergillus, and Cryptococcus species.[1]
Amphotericin B is known for nephrotoxicity and infusion-related reactions, which require careful monitoring, including electrolytes such as potassium and magnesium.[1] Commercially available lipid formulations of amphotericin B have been associated with lower nephrotoxicity than the conventional formulation.[1]

Topical amphotericin B appears among the options in IDSA candidiasis guidance for azole-refractory cases; it is not part of CDC treatment guidance. Your prescriber decides whether it is appropriate for you.
Amphotericin B is an antifungal. Given by vein in the hospital for life-threatening fungal infections, it can damage the kidneys and cause fever-and-chills infusion reactions. The preparations described here are topical, eye drops, a nasal spray, or a vaginal suppository or cream, and are barely absorbed, so those body-wide toxicities are not expected by these routes.
