By selectively inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine, Atomoxetine increases the concentration of this neurotransmitter in the synaptic cleft, enhancing attention and reducing impulsivity and hyperactivity in patients.
Unlike stimulant medications, Atomoxetine Hydrochloride does not have a high potential for abuse, making it a preferred choice for patients with a history of substance misuse. It is metabolized primarily in the liver by the cytochrome P450 2D6 enzyme, and its pharmacokinetics can be influenced by genetic variations in this enzyme, affecting the drug's efficacy and safety profile.
Common side effects associated with Atomoxetine include gastrointestinal disturbances, such as nausea and vomiting, as well as potential cardiovascular effects like increased heart rate and blood pressure.
