Boric acid is a chemical with a long history of use in antiseptics that Bayview compounds into vaginal suppositories, capsules, gel, and other preparations on a prescriber's order.
Boric acid is a weak acid that has long been used in antiseptics, astringents, medicated powders, and some eye wash products.[1] On its own it has no FDA- or EMA-approved therapeutic indication,[2] and intravaginal boric acid is not an FDA-approved drug.[3]
CDC treatment guidelines describe intravaginal boric acid 600 mg for yeast infections caused by non-albicans Candida that come back after treatment,[4] and as one step in a treatment sequence for bacterial vaginosis that has returned several times.[5] Aqueous boric acid solutions are also used to irrigate the eyes, and boric acid appears in veterinary products for external use.[2] Only a licensed prescriber can decide whether a boric acid preparation is appropriate.
Boric acid is poisonous if swallowed. The main symptoms of poisoning are blue-green vomit, diarrhea, and a bright red skin rash, and seizures and death can occur.[1] Vaginal preparations are for vaginal use only, and current guidelines recommend avoiding intravaginal boric acid during pregnancy because data on its safety are limited.[3] If anyone swallows boric acid, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 or 911.[1]
