Ciclopirox Olamine is a hydroxypyridone antifungal that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Ciclopirox Olamine is a synthetic, broad-spectrum antifungal agent used in topical formulations.[1] It is FDA-approved for the topical treatment of superficial fungal infections, including tinea pedis, tinea cruris, and tinea corporis caused by dermatophytes, cutaneous candidiasis, and tinea versicolor.[1] Ciclopirox is also approved in other dosage forms for onychomycosis.[2]
Its mechanism of action is not fully understood. Ciclopirox chelates polyvalent cations (such as Fe3+ or Al3+), which inhibits the metal-dependent enzymes responsible for the degradation of peroxides within the fungal cell,[1] and it is also believed to interfere with the structural integrity of the fungal cell membrane.[2]
Systemic absorption after topical application is low; in one study, an average of 1.3% of the dose was absorbed when the cream was applied to a large area of the back under occlusion for 6 hours.[1] Ciclopirox has no significant associated severe adverse reactions, although skin irritation, burning, contact dermatitis, and itching can occur.[2]

Ciclopirox is a broad-spectrum antifungal used on the skin for athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, yeast rashes, and tinea versicolor, on the scalp for seborrheic dermatitis, and on the nails for fungal infection. Manufactured ciclopirox comes as a 0.77% cream, gel, and lotion, a 1% shampoo, and an 8% nail lacquer. Bayview compounds it when your prescriber wants a higher strength, such as a 6% cream or gel, a 1.5% shampoo or solution, or a nail lacquer in a different vehicle. The compounded preparations are not FDA-approved and are prepared to your prescriber's order.
