About this ingredient

Ciclopirox Olamine is a synthetic antifungal agent widely utilized in dermatological and topical formulations for its broad-spectrum activity against a variety of fungal pathogens. It is particularly effective in treating superficial mycoses, including dermatophyte infections, candidiasis, and tinea versicolor, making it a versatile choice for prescribers managing fungal skin conditions.

Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of fungal cell membrane integrity and function by chelating polyvalent cations, which are essential for the enzymatic activity of the fungal cell. This disruption leads to the inhibition of essential cellular processes, ultimately resulting in fungal cell death.

Ciclopirox Olamine is also noted for its anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce the symptoms of inflammation often associated with fungal infections. This dual action not only targets the causative organism but also alleviates discomfort for the patient.

In addition to its antifungal efficacy, Ciclopirox Olamine exhibits a favorable safety profile, with minimal systemic absorption when applied topically. This makes it a suitable option for long-term use in chronic conditions, with a reduced risk of systemic side effects.

Prescribers may find Ciclopirox Olamine particularly beneficial in patients who require a multifaceted approach to treatment, addressing both the infection and associated inflammatory symptoms. Its versatility and effectiveness make it a valuable component in compounded formulations tailored to individual patient needs.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is compounded ciclopirox?

Ciclopirox is a broad-spectrum antifungal used on the skin for athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, yeast rashes, and tinea versicolor, on the scalp for seborrheic dermatitis, and on the nails for fungal infection. Manufactured ciclopirox comes as a 0.77% cream, gel, and lotion, a 1% shampoo, and an 8% nail lacquer. Bayview compounds it when your prescriber wants a higher strength, such as a 6% cream or gel, a 1.5% shampoo or solution, or a nail lacquer in a different vehicle. The compounded preparations are not FDA-approved and are prepared to your prescriber's order.
