Cisapride Monohydrate is a gastrointestinal motility agent used in veterinary medicine that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Cisapride Monohydrate is a prokinetic agent that stimulates gastrointestinal motility. It acts as a serotonin 5-HT4 receptor agonist, which increases acetylcholine release in the myenteric plexus, stimulating gastric motility and accelerating gastric emptying.[1] In humans, it was previously approved for the symptomatic treatment of nocturnal heartburn due to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults.[1][2]
Cisapride's use is limited by cardiac risk: it may cause serious irregular heartbeats that can be fatal, and the risk is higher when it is taken with certain other medicines, including some antifungals and protease inhibitors, or with grapefruit juice.[2] Cisapride has been withdrawn from the market,[1] and FDA lists all drug products containing cisapride among drug products withdrawn or removed from the market for reasons of safety or effectiveness.[3]

Veterinarians most often prescribe cisapride for cats with constipation or megacolon, a large, poorly-contracting colon, to help move contents through the gut. It is also used for other motility problems and in dogs.
The human product (Propulsid) was withdrawn from the US market over rare heart-rhythm risks, and no FDA-approved animal version was ever made. It is available only through compounding, used off-label at your veterinarian's direction.
