Cromolyn sodium is a mast cell stabilizer used to manage allergic conditions and asthma.[1][3] It works by inhibiting sensitized mast cell degranulation and the release of histamine and leukotrienes, thereby reducing allergic responses and inflammation.[1][4] This mechanism underlies its use in preventing asthma symptoms and bronchospasm and in managing symptoms of allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis.[1][2][3]
Due to its preventive nature, cromolyn sodium is used for ongoing management rather than immediate relief of symptoms, and the inhalation solution has no role in the treatment of status asthmaticus.[1] It is administered via inhalation, nasal spray, or ophthalmic solution, depending on the condition being treated.[1][2][3] Systemic absorption is limited, with about 8% of an inhaled dose absorbed, and common side effects are mostly local, such as cough and wheezing with inhalation, nasal burning or sneezing with the nasal spray, and stinging or burning with eye drops.[1][2][3] The inhalation solution is labeled for patients 2 years of age and older, and the ophthalmic solution for adults and children 4 years of age and older.[1][3]
