Danazol is a synthetic steroid derived from ethisterone, primarily used in the management of endometriosis and fibrocystic breast disease. It functions by suppressing the pituitary-ovarian axis, leading to decreased estrogen production and a subsequent reduction in the growth of endometrial tissue. This mechanism makes it effective in alleviating the symptoms associated with these conditions.
In addition to its gynecological applications, Danazol is also utilized in the treatment of hereditary angioedema, a condition characterized by recurrent episodes of severe swelling. By increasing the levels of C1 inhibitor and other proteins in the blood, Danazol helps prevent these episodes, providing significant relief to patients.
