Methimazole is an antithyroid medicine that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Methimazole is a thionamide antithyroid agent used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone.[2] It works by blocking thyroid peroxidase (thyroperoxidase), the enzyme responsible for synthesizing thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), thereby inhibiting thyroid hormone production in the thyroid gland.[1]
FDA-approved uses include Graves disease, toxic multinodular goiter when surgery or radioactive iodine is not appropriate, and relief of symptoms before thyroidectomy; use in thyroid storm is off-label.[1]
Methimazole is given orally. Its plasma half-life is about 4 to 6 hours, and dosing depends on the severity of the condition, with higher initial doses followed by lower maintenance doses.[1]
Common adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, and rash, and methimazole carries warnings for severe hepatotoxicity and potentially fatal agranulocytosis.[1] Thyroid function tests are monitored at regular intervals, and patients are told to report fever or sore throat, which can signal agranulocytosis.[1]
