Miconazole Nitrate is an azole antifungal that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Miconazole nitrate is an imidazole antifungal agent.[2] Like other azole antifungals, it inhibits lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, the enzyme that converts lanosterol to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, which increases membrane permeability and leads to fungal cell lysis and death.[1]
Miconazole is FDA-approved for topical treatment of tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea corporis (ringworm), and candidiasis infections, and it is administered topically, vaginally, and buccally.[1] Vaginal miconazole is used to treat vaginal yeast infections.[2]
Miconazole has poor absorption from the skin and vagina and poor oral bioavailability.[3] For this reason, LactMed considers it unlikely to adversely affect a breastfed infant, including after topical application to the nipples, and advises removing any excess cream or ointment from the nipples before nursing.[3]
