Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting agent primarily used to treat excessive sleepiness caused by conditions such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and shift work sleep disorder. It functions by altering neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly targeting the dopamine transporter, which increases extracellular dopamine levels, thereby enhancing alertness and cognitive function.
In addition to its primary uses, modafinil is sometimes prescribed off-label for conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and major depressive disorder, particularly when traditional treatments have proven ineffective. Its unique mechanism of action, which differs from traditional stimulants, makes it a valuable option for patients who may not tolerate other medications well.
