Scopolamine, the medicine in the motion sickness patch, prepared by Bayview as a transdermal gel, oral capsules or troches, an oral suspension, or a nasal spray in the strength your prescriber orders. In the United States scopolamine is manufactured only as the patch and an injection, so the other forms are compounded. They are not FDA-approved, their use is off-label, and a prescription is required.
Anyone with angle-closure glaucoma or an allergy to scopolamine or other belladonna alkaloids. Talk with your prescriber first if you have an enlarged prostate or trouble urinating, a bowel obstruction, a seizure disorder, heart disease, myasthenia gravis, or a history of psychosis, if you are over 65, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is not established as safe in children, and other anticholinergic medicines and sedatives add to its effects.
