Sodium Acetate is the sodium salt of acetic acid that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Sodium acetate is an ingredient used in pharmaceutical preparations. It is used as a buffer, including to counteract the effect of strong acids.[2]
In medicine, sodium acetate is also used as a systemic and urinary alkalizer.[2] FDA-approved sodium acetate injection is indicated as a source of sodium for addition to large-volume intravenous fluids to prevent or correct hyponatremia in patients with restricted or no oral intake. Sodium is the principal cation of extracellular fluid, and acetate serves as an alternate source of bicarbonate by metabolic conversion in the liver.[1]
