Zinc Oxide is a white mineral powder used in skin protectant products that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Zinc oxide is an active ingredient used in topical skin protectant products. FDA's over-the-counter skin protectant regulations list zinc oxide at 1 to 25 percent as a skin protectant active ingredient.[1] Zinc oxide products help keep moisture away from the skin and are used for diaper rash.[2]
Under the same regulations, skin protectant products containing zinc oxide may be labeled to dry the oozing and weeping of poison ivy, oak, and sumac.[1]
Zinc oxide is also used in sunscreens. FDA has found sufficient safety data to propose that sunscreen products containing zinc oxide at concentrations of up to 25% are generally recognized as safe and effective.[3] FDA notes that broad spectrum sunscreens with an SPF of at least 15 are only one element of a skin cancer prevention strategy that should also include other sun protective behaviors.[3]
Bayview compounds topical preparations containing zinc oxide on a prescriber's order.

This page describes an active pharmaceutical ingredient, not a finished drug product. Bayview Pharmacy compounds preparations containing it only on a prescriber's order for an individual patient.
Compounded preparations are not FDA-approved, and the FDA has not evaluated them for safety, effectiveness, or manufacturing quality. Nothing on this page is a claim that any preparation is effective for any condition.
A valid prescription is required. Availability depends on Bayview's licensure in your state. This page is general information, not medical advice — discuss your situation with a licensed healthcare provider.
