Formula Information

A small arrow pointing down

Bayview Pharmacy is pleased to provide Carbidopa 10 mg/Levodopa 100 mg Capsules (Gluten Free), a compounded formulation designed for the treatment of Parkinson's Disease, Restless Leg Syndrome, Dopamine-Responsive Dystonia, Multiple System Atrophy, and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. This medication combines Carbidopa and Levodopa, two active ingredients that work synergistically to increase the levels of dopamine in the brain, thereby helping to alleviate the symptoms associated with these conditions.

Carbidopa functions by inhibiting the breakdown of Levodopa in the body, thereby allowing a greater quantity of the medication to reach the brain. This formulation is gluten-free, making it a suitable choice for individuals with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.

This compounded formulation is a potent treatment for the aforementioned diseases, and can help to mitigate symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and difficulties with movement. It's crucial to understand that this medication may require several weeks to achieve its maximum effect, and it may cause side effects such as nausea, dizziness, and confusion. Therefore, it is highly recommended to discuss any potential side effects with your healthcare provider before initiating this medication.

The Carbidopa 10 mg/Levodopa 100 mg Capsules (Gluten Free) are solid dosage forms composed of two gelatin or vegetarian shells that enclose the medication. This design allows for convenient and easy swallowing, and ensures a precise dosage of the active ingredients.

If you have any queries about Carbidopa 10 mg/Levodopa 100 mg Capsules (Gluten Free) or any of the diseases mentioned above, please do not hesitate to contact us at Bayview Pharmacy. Our team is committed to assisting you in finding the most suitable treatment option for your specific needs.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

This compounded formulation of Carbidopa 10 mg/Levodopa 100 mg Capsules (Gluten Free) is specifically designed for the treatment of various neurological disorders including Parkinson's Disease, Restless Leg Syndrome, Dopamine-Responsive Dystonia, Multiple System Atrophy, and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. The active ingredients, Carbidopa and Levodopa, work synergistically to increase the availability of dopamine in the brain, a neurotransmitter that is notably deficient in patients suffering from these conditions.

Carbidopa acts as an inhibitor of aromatic amino acid decarboxylase, an enzyme that is responsible for the conversion of levodopa to dopamine. By inhibiting this enzyme, Carbidopa ensures that more Levodopa reaches the brain where it is converted to dopamine, thereby effectively alleviating the symptoms of these diseases.

However, it is crucial to note that this formulation is contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma as it can exacerbate the condition. Potential side effects of this formulation may include nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, and patients should be closely monitored for these symptoms. Furthermore, this formulation may interact with other medications such as antacids, iron supplements, and certain antibiotics. Therefore, patients are strongly advised to consult their healthcare provider before taking any other medications alongside this formulation.

While this formulation is designed for easy swallowing and precise dosage, it is essential for patients to follow the prescribed dosage regimen and to communicate any concerns or side effects to their healthcare provider promptly.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

Carbidopa 10 mg/Levodopa 100 mg Capsules (Gluten Free) is a compounded formulation designed to treat a range of neurological conditions including Parkinson's Disease, Restless Leg Syndrome, Dopamine-Responsive Dystonia, Multiple System Atrophy, and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. This medication combines two active ingredients, Carbidopa and Levodopa, to increase the availability of dopamine in the brain, a neurotransmitter that is often deficient in patients with these conditions.

Carbidopa acts as an inhibitor of the enzyme aromatic amino acid decarboxylase, which is responsible for the conversion of levodopa to dopamine. By inhibiting this conversion, more levodopa is able to reach the brain and be converted into dopamine. This increase in dopamine helps to alleviate the symptoms associated with these neurological conditions.

The medication is encapsulated in either gelatin or vegetarian shells, making it easy to swallow and ensuring a precise dosage of the active ingredients. It should be taken orally, with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider. It is crucial to adhere to the prescribed dosage and timing to ensure the effectiveness of the medication. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered unless it is close to the time for the next dose. In such cases, the missed dose should be skipped and the regular dosing schedule resumed. Double dosing should be avoided.

Compounded preparations have no NDC, so this formula will not appear in your EHR's drug search. Use your system's compound, non-formulary, or free-text prescription entry and name the preparation exactly as written in step 3. Compounded preparations have no NDC and will not appear in your drug search. For EPCS to validate, select a drug entry your EHR recognizes as controlled, usually the bulk powder entry for the active ingredient (for example Ketamine (bulk) powder, not a branded product), then put the full formula from step 3 in the prescription body.
