Formula Information

A small arrow pointing down

Chloramphenicol 150 mg/ml Oral Liquid is a specially formulated medication designed for oral administration. This liquid formulation provides a convenient and easily ingested dosage form, ensuring accurate delivery of medication. It is particularly beneficial for patients who find swallowing solid dosage forms challenging, such as children and the elderly.

It works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, thereby preventing their growth and multiplication. This makes it a valuable treatment option for various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and eye infections.

It's important to note that Chloramphenicol should only be used when absolutely necessary due to the risk of serious side effects, including bone marrow suppression and aplastic anemia. Therefore, it is typically reserved for severe infections or those that are resistant to other antibiotics.

Patients should take this medication exactly as prescribed by their healthcare provider. The dosage will depend on the patient's condition, age, and response to treatment. It's crucial to continue taking this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may result in a return of the infection.

Common side effects of Chloramphenicol include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If any of these effects persist or worsen, patients should inform their healthcare provider promptly. Although serious side effects are rare, patients should seek immediate medical attention if they notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

Prescribers should be aware of the potential for drug interactions with Chloramphenicol. This medication may interact with other drugs that can cause bone marrow suppression, such as azathioprine or sulfonamides, potentially increasing the risk of side effects. Therefore, a thorough review of the patient's medication list is necessary before starting treatment with Chloramphenicol.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

Chloramphenicol 150 mg/ml Oral Liquid is used to treat serious infections such as meningitis, typhoid fever, and certain types of pneumonia. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby stopping the growth and multiplication of bacteria.

While Chloramphenicol is a potent antibiotic, it is important to be aware of potential drug interactions that may affect its efficacy or cause adverse effects. Here are some key interactions to consider:

Anticoagulants: Chloramphenicol may enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and other coumarins, increasing the risk of bleeding. Regular monitoring of INR and adjustment of anticoagulant dosage may be necessary during and after treatment with Chloramphenicol.

Antidiabetic agents: Concurrent use of Chloramphenicol and antidiabetic agents may result in increased blood glucose levels. Close monitoring of blood glucose is recommended.

Antifungal agents: Chloramphenicol may decrease the effectiveness of antifungal agents like Amphotericin B. If both medications are necessary, careful monitoring for fungal infection progression is advised.

Antiretroviral drugs: Chloramphenicol may decrease the plasma concentrations of antiretroviral drugs, potentially reducing their efficacy. Dose adjustments may be necessary.

Iron supplements: Iron may decrease the absorption of Chloramphenicol, reducing its effectiveness. It is advisable to take Chloramphenicol at least two hours before or after iron supplements.

It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential drug interactions. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as vitamins and herbal supplements.

Remember, this is not a complete list of possible drug interactions. Always consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist for guidance based on your specific circumstances. If you have any questions or concerns about Chloramphenicol or its potential interactions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. We are here to help.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

Chloramphenicol 150 mg/ml Oral Liquid is a specially formulated medication that is designed to be taken orally. It is a liquid formulation, which makes it easier to ingest, particularly for individuals who have difficulty swallowing solid dosage forms, such as tablets or capsules. This can be particularly beneficial for pediatric and geriatric populations, or for individuals with certain medical conditions that make swallowing difficult.

Chloramphenicol works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, which prevents them from growing and multiplying. This effectively stops the spread of the infection, allowing the body's immune system to eliminate the remaining bacteria.

Chloramphenicol 150 mg/ml Oral Liquid is used to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin infections, eye infections, and ear infections. It is also used to treat typhoid fever and other serious infections where other antibiotics may not be effective.

It's important to note that while chloramphenicol is a powerful antibiotic, it should only be used when absolutely necessary due to potential side effects and the risk of bacterial resistance. Always use this medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, and complete the full course of treatment, even if you start to feel better before the medication is finished.

As with any medication, Chloramphenicol 150 mg/ml Oral Liquid may cause side effects. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If these side effects persist or worsen, or if you experience any serious side effects such as unusual bleeding or bruising, persistent sore throat, or fever, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Compounded preparations have no NDC, so this formula will not appear in your EHR's drug search. Use your system's compound, non-formulary, or free-text prescription entry and name the preparation exactly as written in step 3. If your EHR forces you to pick a listed drug, pick the closest entry for the active ingredient and put the full formula in the prescription body (the Sig or directions field), not in Notes to Pharmacy.

Compounded preparations have no NDC and will not appear in your drug search. For EPCS to validate, select a drug entry your EHR recognizes as controlled, usually the bulk powder entry for the active ingredient (for example Ketamine (bulk) powder, not a branded product), then put the full formula from step 3 in the prescription body. A free-text entry that does not validate as controlled will be rejected by your EPCS module.
