Clonazepam 1 mg/ml Oral Liquid is a specially formulated medication designed for oral administration. This formulation provides a convenient and easily ingested dosage form, ensuring accurate delivery of medication. It is particularly beneficial for patients who find swallowing solid dosage forms challenging, such as children and the elderly. The liquid formulation allows for easy dose adjustments, making it an ideal choice for a wide range of patients.

Clonazepam is a type of medication known as a benzodiazepine. It works by enhancing the activity of a neurotransmitter in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA inhibits brain activity, and the increased GABA activity triggered by clonazepam results in a calming effect on the nervous system. This action helps to reduce anxiety, induce sleep, relax muscles, and control seizures.

This formulation is primarily used in the treatment of various disease states such as seizures, panic disorder, and movement disorders known as akathisia. In seizure disorders, Clonazepam 1 mg/ml Oral Liquid can decrease the frequency of seizures, providing significant relief for patients. For those suffering from panic disorders, this medication can reduce the intensity and frequency of panic attacks, improving the overall quality of life. In the case of akathisia, a condition characterized by a feeling of inner restlessness and inability to stay still, clonazepam can help to alleviate these symptoms.

It's important to note that Clonazepam 1 mg/ml Oral Liquid should be used under the supervision of a healthcare provider, as it can cause physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly. Side effects can include drowsiness, dizziness, and loss of coordination, which should be considered when prescribing and administering this medication. Regular monitoring and follow-up are necessary to ensure the safe and appropriate use of this medication.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

Clonazepam is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. It is primarily used to treat conditions such as seizures, panic disorder, and movement disorders. It works by enhancing the activity of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, which helps to produce a calming and anti-convulsant effect.

However, like all medications, Clonazepam can interact with other drugs, which can alter how the medication works or increase the risk of serious side effects. It is important to keep a list of all the products you use (including prescription/nonprescription drugs and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicines without your doctor's approval.

Some products that may interact with this drug include: certain antifungal medications (such as ketoconazole), drugs used to treat HIV (delavirdine, protease inhibitors such as indinavir), macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin), rifamycins (such as rifabutin), St. John's wort, drugs used to treat seizures (such as phenytoin), among others.

Clonazepam can also interact with certain medications that cause drowsiness including alcohol, antihistamines (such as cetirizine, diphenhydramine), drugs for sleep or anxiety (such as alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants, and narcotic pain relievers (such as codeine).

It's also important to note that Clonazepam can interact with certain foods. For instance, consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice can increase the level of Clonazepam in your body, which can increase the risk of side effects. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid consuming grapefruit products while taking this medication unless your doctor or pharmacist says you may do so safely.

Lastly, Clonazepam can interact with tobacco. If you smoke, tell your doctor or pharmacist so they can monitor your treatment more closely.

If you have any questions about the potential interactions of Clonazepam, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are here to provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information to ensure your safety and the effectiveness of your treatment.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

Clonazepam 1 mg/ml Oral Liquid is a specially formulated medication that is designed to be taken orally. It is a benzodiazepine, a class of drugs that work by enhancing the effects of a neurotransmitter in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA inhibits activity in the brain, which can help to reduce anxiety, relax muscles, and stop seizures. By increasing the effects of GABA, Clonazepam helps to slow down brain activity.

The liquid formulation of Clonazepam is particularly beneficial for patients who have difficulty swallowing solid dosage forms, such as tablets or capsules. This can include children, the elderly, or individuals with certain medical conditions. The liquid form allows for accurate dosing and easy administration, as it can be measured out using a dropper or oral syringe and then swallowed directly or mixed with a small amount of liquid.

Clonazepam 1 mg/ml Oral Liquid works by quickly being absorbed into the bloodstream after being swallowed. It then travels to the brain, where it enhances the effects of GABA. This results in a calming effect, which can help to reduce symptoms of anxiety and panic disorders, prevent seizures, and control involuntary muscle movements. The effects of Clonazepam typically begin within an hour of taking the medication and can last for up to 12 hours, depending on the individual's metabolism and other factors.

It's important to note that Clonazepam can cause physical and psychological dependence, and should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare provider. It should be taken exactly as prescribed, and should not be stopped suddenly without consulting a healthcare provider, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms. Side effects can include drowsiness, dizziness, and confusion, and these can be more pronounced in the elderly. If you have any questions about Clonazepam 1 mg/ml Oral Liquid, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy.

Compounded preparations have no NDC, so this formula will not appear in your EHR's drug search. Use your system's compound, non-formulary, or free-text prescription entry and name the preparation exactly as written in step 3. If your EHR forces you to pick a listed drug, pick the closest entry for the active ingredient and put the full formula in the prescription body (the Sig or directions field), not in Notes to Pharmacy.

Compounded preparations have no NDC and will not appear in your drug search. For EPCS to validate, select a drug entry your EHR recognizes as controlled, usually the bulk powder entry for the active ingredient (for example Ketamine (bulk) powder, not a branded product), then put the full formula from step 3 in the prescription body. A free-text entry that does not validate as controlled will be rejected by your EPCS module.
