Formula Information

A small arrow pointing down

Coal Tar Solution 3% Topical Cream is a specially formulated semisolid preparation that is dispensed using a pump mechanism. This design allows for convenient and controlled application on the skin, ensuring that the active ingredients are localized to the area of treatment or absorption. The primary active ingredient in this formulation is coal tar, a substance known for its therapeutic properties in treating various skin conditions.

Coal tar is a byproduct of coal processing that has been used in medicine for centuries. It has anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and keratolytic properties, which means it can reduce inflammation, relieve itching, and promote the shedding of dead skin cells.

When applied topically, coal tar works by slowing down the rapid growth of skin cells associated with psoriasis and other similar conditions. This helps to reduce scaling and plaque formation, and also alleviates symptoms such as itching and inflammation. The cream base of this formulation also provides a moisturizing effect, which can help to soothe dry, cracked skin and improve the overall appearance and texture of the skin.

It should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, under the guidance of a healthcare provider. As with any medication, it's important to use this product as directed to ensure its safety and effectiveness. Side effects are generally mild and may include skin irritation or sensitivity to sunlight. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.

At Bayview Pharmacy, we are a team of knowledgeable compounding pharmacists who are dedicated to providing high-quality, personalized medications to meet the unique needs of our patients. Coal Tar Solution 3% Topical Cream is a semisolid preparation designed for direct application on the skin. It is dispensed via a pump mechanism, which allows for convenient and controlled application. This formulation is primarily used for the treatment of various skin conditions, including psoriasis, dermatitis, and dandruff. It works by causing the skin to shed dead cells from its top layer and slow down the growth of skin cells.

While Coal Tar Solution 3% Topical Cream is generally safe for use, it may interact with certain medications and substances. For instance, it can increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight, leading to sunburn. Therefore, it is recommended to limit your exposure to the sun while using this medication, and to apply a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. It is also advisable to avoid using other medicated skin products unless directed by your doctor, as it may lead to increased absorption of the active ingredients, potentially causing unwanted side effects.

Furthermore, this medication should not be used with other drugs that also increase sensitivity to sunlight, such as tetracycline antibiotics, sulfa drugs, and certain water pills (diuretics), unless directed by your doctor. If you are using these medications, inform your doctor or pharmacist before starting treatment with Coal Tar Solution 3% Topical Cream.

It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products, before starting treatment with this medication. This will help your healthcare provider to prevent potential interactions and ensure safe use of the medication.

While using Coal Tar Solution 3% Topical Cream, avoid getting it in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If this happens, rinse with plenty of water. Do not apply this medication on open wounds or infected skin areas. If your condition persists or worsens after using this medication, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

Coal Tar Solution 3% Topical Cream is a semisolid preparation that is dispensed in a pump mechanism. This design allows for convenient and controlled application on the skin for localized treatment or absorption of active ingredients. The primary active ingredient in this formulation is coal tar, a byproduct of coal processing that has been used for centuries to treat various skin conditions.

Coal tar works by slowing down the growth of skin cells. This is particularly useful in conditions where skin cell turnover is faster than normal, such as psoriasis and eczema. By slowing down the rate at which skin cells are produced, coal tar helps to reduce the scaling, itching, and inflammation associated with these conditions. It also has mild antiseptic properties, which can help to prevent infection in broken or damaged skin.

When applied to the skin, coal tar forms a thin, protective layer that helps to keep the skin hydrated and promotes healing. It also helps to soften and remove scales, making the skin feel smoother and less itchy. The pump mechanism of the Coal Tar Solution 3% Topical Cream allows for easy and controlled application, ensuring that the right amount of product is applied to the affected area.

Regular use is typically required to maintain symptom relief. As with any medication, it's important to use coal tar as directed by a healthcare provider. Side effects can include skin irritation, redness, or discoloration, especially in individuals with sensitive skin or when used in high concentrations. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.

Coal Tar Solution 3% Topical Cream is a valuable tool in the management of skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Other Uses

A small arrow pointing down

Other than its main therapeutic uses, Coal Tar Solution 3% Topical Cream may also be used subtly and beneficially in other conditions. Although primarily prescribed in dermatological conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and other dry, scaly skin disorders, this formulation can also extend its benefits to care for seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis, a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by scaly and itchy areas of skin, often results in discomfort for patients. Hence, our Coal Tar Solution 3% Topical Cream may alleviate symptoms associated with seborrheic dermatitis due to its mild keratolytic and antipruritic (itch relieving) actions.

The antipruritic properties extend the use of this formulation to the control and relief of itch, irritation, and scaling associated with a wide range of skin conditions, including lichen planus, intertrigo, and prurigo nodularis. Lichen planus is a rash triggered by the immune system, while intertrigo is a rash that appears in large skin folds where your skin rubs against itself. Prurigo nodularis on the other hand is a skin disease resulting in hard, itchy lumps. Despite these conditions differing in manifestation, they share a common symptom, itching, which this formulation is well-equipped to soothe.

Another potential application of our Coal Tar Solution 3% Topical Cream is for the reduction and control of dandruff. Patients who have extensive scalp involvement may use this product to reduce the flaky build-up as it helps to normalize the proliferation of skin cells that cause dandruff and scalp psoriasis.

It’s important to note the potential versatility of our 3% Coal Tar Solution Topical Cream, we strongly advise patients and healthcare providers to consult with a pharmacist or other healthcare professional before using this formulation for conditions other than it is primarily indicated for. Also, please be aware that while it may be useful in managing symptoms of these conditions, it is not a cure and should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

If you have any inquiries about the uses, composition, or contraindications of our Coal Tar Solution 3% Topical Cream, do not hesitate to reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. For EPCS to validate, select a drug entry your EHR recognizes as controlled, usually the bulk powder entry for the active ingredient (for example Ketamine (bulk) powder, not a branded product), then put the full formula from step 3 in the prescription body.
