Benzocaine is a local anesthetic of the amino ester class.[1] It works by reversibly blocking sodium channels in nerve cell membranes, which stops nerve signal transmission and provides temporary numbing.[1] It is used topically for localized pain, such as in dental procedures, minor skin trauma and irritation, and sore throat.[1]
Benzocaine has a rapid onset of action, typically within about 30 seconds at a 20% concentration.[1] Prescribers should be aware of the potential for allergic reactions, contact dermatitis, and methemoglobinemia, a rare but potentially life-threatening condition.[1] Older adults and patients with conditions such as bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, or heart disease are at greater risk, and the FDA has warned against over-the-counter oral benzocaine products for children younger than 2 years.[1]
