Clomiphene citrate is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) made up of two isomers, enclomiphene and zuclomiphene.[3] FDA-approved clomiphene citrate 50 mg tablets are indicated for ovulatory dysfunction in women desiring pregnancy, and the labeling states that adequate, well-controlled studies have not shown effectiveness for male infertility.[1]
Clomiphene is also prescribed off-label for men with secondary hypogonadism or male infertility.[2] Labeled warnings include visual symptoms, which call for stopping treatment and an eye evaluation, and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in women; gynecomastia and testicular tumors have been reported in men.[1] Bayview dispenses the manufactured tablets and does not compound them; see Clomiphene Citrate Tablets for Men.
