Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces gastric acid production. It inhibits the parietal cell H+/K+ ATPase pump, the final step of acid production, and is used in the treatment of conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and peptic ulcer disease.[1]
FDA-approved omeprazole products include delayed-release capsules and a delayed-release oral suspension.[2] Bayview compounds omeprazole preparations on a prescriber's order.
Omeprazole is absorbed rapidly, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 0.5 to 3.5 hours.[2] It is extensively metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system, mainly CYP2C19 and also CYP3A4, and most of a dose is eliminated in the urine as metabolites.[2][1]
Prescribers should consider potential drug interactions, as omeprazole can compete with other CYP2C19 substrates, such as clopidogrel, warfarin, and phenytoin.[1] Additionally, long-term use of PPIs may be associated with certain risks, such as vitamin B12 deficiency, hypomagnesemia, and an increased risk of osteoporosis-related fractures of the hip, wrist, or spine.[2][1]
