Papaverine Hydrochloride is a smooth muscle relaxant and vasodilator that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Papaverine hydrochloride is a vasodilator and smooth muscle relaxant. Papaverine is an alkaloid of the benzylisoquinoline group, obtained from opium or prepared synthetically.[1] It acts directly on smooth muscle, relaxing it, especially when the muscle is in spasm, and it relaxes the smooth muscle of larger blood vessels, including the coronary, cerebral, peripheral, and pulmonary arteries.[1] Its labeled uses are conditions accompanied by smooth muscle spasm, such as vascular spasm and visceral spasm in ureteral, biliary, or gastrointestinal colic.[1]
Papaverine is also one of several agents that cause smooth muscle relaxation, vasodilation, and erections when injected into the corpora cavernosa, and it is a component of the combinations known as Trimix and Quadmix, which must be prepared by a compounding pharmacy.[2] This use is off-label: only prostaglandin E1 (alprostadil) is FDA approved for intracavernosal injection therapy for erectile dysfunction, and papaverine labeling states that it is not indicated for intracorporeal injection, which has been reported to cause persistent priapism.[2][1] Other side effects of intracavernosal injections include pain, bleeding or bruising at the injection site, and scarring.[2]
