Salicylic Acid is a beta hydroxy acid used in topical skin products that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Salicylic acid is a keratolytic agent.[1] It is used topically in conditions such as acne, warts, psoriasis, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, corns, and calluses.[1][5] FDA over-the-counter monographs include salicylic acid 0.5 to 2 percent for acne, 1.8 to 3 percent for dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis, and 5 to 40 percent in specified vehicles for wart removal.[2][4][3] In acne, it works by reducing swelling and redness and unplugging blocked pores.[1]

Prescribers should consider concentration and frequency of application, since skin may become dry or irritated, particularly at the beginning of treatment. Patient history should be reviewed for allergy to salicylic acid or other ingredients, and for use of other salicylates such as aspirin or methyl salicylate.[1]
