Formula Information

A small arrow pointing down

This formulation is a transdermal cream containing Camphor 0.5%, Diclofenac Sodium 10%, and Menthol 3.5%. It is a semisolid preparation dispensed in a pump mechanism, designed for convenient and controlled application on the skin. The cream is intended for localized treatment or absorption of active ingredients.

Camphor, a terpenoid, is known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It helps in relieving pain and inflammation in the skin and underlying tissues. Diclofenac Sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by reducing substances in the body that cause pain and inflammation. It is commonly used to treat mild to moderate pain, or signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Menthol, on the other hand, provides a cooling sensation when applied to the skin, which can help to relieve minor pain and irritation.

It can be used to manage conditions such as arthritis, muscle strains, sprains, and other musculoskeletal conditions. The cream works by being absorbed through the skin and reducing inflammation and pain in the specific area it is applied to.

For patients, it is important to apply the cream as directed by your healthcare provider, usually 3-4 times daily or as needed. The cream should be applied to the affected area and rubbed in gently until it is absorbed. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. If you experience any adverse reactions such as rash, itching, redness, or severe discomfort, discontinue use and contact your healthcare provider immediately.

For prescribers, it is crucial to consider the patient's overall health status, other medications, and potential drug interactions before prescribing this formulation. It is not recommended for patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients. Also, it should be used with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal bleeding or kidney disease due to the presence of Diclofenac Sodium.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

This formulation of Camphor 0.5%/Diclofenac Sodium 10%/Menthol 3.5% Transdermal Cream is designed to provide localized relief from pain and inflammation. Diclofenac Sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by reducing substances in the body that cause pain and inflammation. Camphor and Menthol are topical analgesics that work by causing the skin to feel cool and then warm, which can help to alleviate pain.

While this formulation is generally safe for use, it's important to be aware of potential drug interactions. Diclofenac Sodium, in particular, may interact with other medications. These include blood thinners like warfarin, other NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen, and certain types of antidepressants. It's important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and dietary supplements, to avoid potential interactions.

Camphor and Menthol may also interact with certain medications, although these interactions are less common. However, it's still important to inform your healthcare provider if you are using any other topical medications on the same area of skin where you are applying this cream.

It's also important to note that while this formulation can help to manage symptoms, it does not cure the underlying disease states. It should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, under the supervision of a healthcare provider.

Patients should apply the cream as directed by their healthcare provider, typically 3-4 times daily or as needed for pain. The cream should be applied to the affected area in a thin layer and rubbed in gently until it is fully absorbed. Avoid applying the cream to broken skin or open wounds, and avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes.

Side effects can include skin irritation, redness, or a burning sensation at the application site. If these side effects persist or worsen, or if you experience any other side effects such as stomach pain, heartburn, or allergic reactions, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

If you have any questions about this formulation, or if you are experiencing any issues with its use, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. Our team of knowledgeable compounding pharmacists is here to help.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

This formulation is a transdermal cream that contains three active ingredients: Camphor 0.5%, Diclofenac Sodium 10%, and Menthol 3.5%. Each of these ingredients plays a unique role in providing relief from pain and inflammation.

Diclofenac Sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by reducing substances in the body that cause pain and inflammation. It is often used to treat mild to moderate pain, or signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. In this formulation, it is the primary ingredient responsible for reducing inflammation and relieving pain.

Camphor and Menthol are topical analgesics that work by causing the skin to feel cool and then warm. These feelings on the skin distract you from feeling the aches/pains deeper in your muscles, joints, and tendons. Menthol, on the other hand, provides a cooling sensation that can help numb pain and reduce the sensation of inflammation.

The cream is designed to be applied topically, directly to the area of pain or inflammation. The active ingredients are then absorbed through the skin, providing localized treatment. This allows for targeted relief, without the systemic side effects that can occur with oral medication. The pump mechanism allows for convenient and controlled application, ensuring that the correct dose is applied each time.

It's important to note that while this formulation can provide significant relief from pain and inflammation, it is not a cure for the underlying conditions causing these symptoms. It should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, under the supervision of a healthcare provider.

If you have any questions about this formulation, how to use it, or if it's the right treatment for you, don't hesitate to reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. Our team of knowledgeable compounding pharmacists is here to help.

Other Uses

A small arrow pointing down

Camphor 0.5%/Diclofenac Sodium 10%/Menthol 3.5% Transdermal Cream is commonly formulated for the management of local pain or inflammation. However, its unique triple-action formula also allows for a variety of other uses that both patients and prescribers might find beneficial.

The powerful anti-inflammatory properties of Diclofenac Sodium at a 10% concentration can be useful as a localized treatment for other inflammatory conditions. For instance, it can potentially be beneficial for localized dermatitis or other skin inflammatory conditions. However, this should always be confirmed with a healthcare provider, as Diclofenac Sodium primarily provides topical pain relief.

Camphor at 0.5% concentration can be used as an antipruritic, providing relief from itching, while its antibacterial and antifungal properties might make it beneficial for minor skin infections. It's important to note that although Camphor has these benefits, it is primarily used for pain and inflammation, and shouldn't substitute proper medical treatment for severe infections or skin conditions.

Menthol at 3.5% concentration in the formulation provides a cooling sensation which can help to further alleviate pain and discomfort. Additionally, this ingredient can potentially be used to provide mild relief from sunburn or insect bites due to its properties of producing a cooling effect and numbing the skin.

This unique combination of ingredients might also be beneficial as a muscle relaxant. The menthol and camphor might help to alleviate muscle tightness and spasms, while the Diclofenac Sodium can address any accompanying inflammation and pain.

It's crucial to remember that while this formulation presents a range of potential uses beyond traditional pain relief, usage for conditions other than those prescribed should always be under the advice and supervision of a trained healthcare professional.

Please reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy with any questions regarding the suitability of this formulation for a particular patient or condition. Our team of compounding pharmacists is always ready to share their expertise and provide additional information if necessary.

Use your system's compound, non-formulary, or free-text prescription entry and name the preparation exactly as written in step 3. For EPCS to validate, select a drug entry your EHR recognizes as controlled, usually the bulk powder entry for the active ingredient (for example Ketamine (bulk) powder, not a branded product), then put the full formula from step 3 in the prescription body.
