Menthol is a cooling compound from peppermint and other mint oils that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Menthol is a cyclic monoterpene alcohol derived primarily from aromatic plants, and it is found in peppermint oil.[1][2] At low to moderate concentrations, menthol activates the TRPM8 receptor, the main cold sensor in the body, which produces a cooling sensation; at higher concentrations it can cause burning and irritation.[1] Topical over-the-counter pain relief products containing menthol typically use concentrations of about 5% to 16%.[1]
Menthol has local anesthetic activity, and in one study it improved the analgesic effect of a tetracaine gel in part through enhanced percutaneous permeation.[1]
In respiratory products, menthol is listed in the FDA over-the-counter monograph as a topical antitussive (cough suppressant) active ingredient.[3] Menthol, like the peppermint oil that contains it, should not be inhaled by or applied to the face of an infant or small child because it may affect their breathing.[2]
