Formula Information

A small arrow pointing down

This formulation combines Clobetasol 17-Propionate, a potent corticosteroid, and Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, in a topical cream. The cream is dispensed in a pump mechanism, which allows for convenient and controlled application on the skin. This formulation is designed for localized treatment, meaning it is intended to be applied directly to the area of the skin that requires treatment.

Clobetasol 17-Propionate is a highly potent steroid that is used to reduce inflammation and itching associated with various skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema. It works by suppressing the immune response, which reduces inflammation and relieves itching. Niacinamide, on the other hand, has anti-inflammatory properties and can help to improve the skin's barrier function. It can also help to reduce redness and swelling, making it a useful addition to this formulation.

The combination of these two active ingredients in a single formulation provides a dual-action treatment approach. The Clobetasol 17-Propionate works to quickly reduce inflammation and itching, while the Niacinamide helps to improve the overall health and appearance of the skin over time.

It's important to note that while this formulation can provide significant relief from symptoms, it is not a cure for the underlying skin condition. It should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, under the guidance of a healthcare provider. As with any medication, it's important to use this formulation as directed to ensure the best possible results.

If you have any questions about this formulation, or if you would like more information about how it can be used to treat specific skin conditions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Our team of compounding pharmacists at Bayview Pharmacy is always here to help.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

Clobetasol 17-Propionate 0.05%/Niacinamide 2% Topical Cream is a potent formulation designed to treat a variety of skin conditions. Clobetasol propionate is a corticosteroid that works by reducing inflammation and immune responses, thereby alleviating symptoms such as swelling, itching, and redness. Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, has anti-inflammatory properties and can help improve the skin's barrier function, reduce hyperpigmentation, and hydrate the skin.

While this formulation is generally safe for most patients, it's important to be aware of potential drug interactions. Clobetasol propionate can interact with other topical medications, especially those containing corticosteroids. Using multiple corticosteroid-containing products can increase the risk of side effects, including skin thinning, stretch marks, and adrenal suppression. Therefore, it's crucial to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you're currently using, including over-the-counter products and herbal supplements.

Niacinamide is generally well-tolerated and has minimal interactions with other medications. However, it can cause flushing and itching when used with alcohol or hot beverages. It's also worth noting that niacinamide can affect the body's ability to absorb certain antibiotics when taken orally, although this is less likely to be a concern with topical use.

Patients with certain medical conditions should use this formulation with caution. Those with a history of poor blood circulation, diabetes, or immune system problems may be at a higher risk of experiencing side effects from clobetasol propionate. Similarly, patients with a history of liver disease, stomach ulcers, or gout should consult their healthcare provider before using products containing niacinamide.

It's important to use this medication as directed by your healthcare provider. Overuse or misuse can lead to increased side effects and decreased effectiveness. If you experience any unusual symptoms or side effects, such as severe irritation, redness, or worsening of your condition, stop using the product and seek medical attention immediately.

Remember, this information is intended to supplement, not substitute for, the expertise and judgment of your healthcare provider. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting, stopping, or changing the dosage of any medication. If you have any questions about this formulation or its potential interactions, don't hesitate to reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. We're here to help.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

Clobetasol 17-Propionate 0.05%/Niacinamide 2% Topical Cream is a specially formulated medication that combines the potent corticosteroid, Clobetasol 17-Propionate, and the vitamin B3 derivative, Niacinamide. This unique combination works synergistically to treat a variety of skin conditions.

Clobetasol 17-Propionate, the primary active ingredient, is a highly potent corticosteroid that works by reducing inflammation, itching, and redness. It does this by suppressing the immune response, which reduces the release of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation.

Niacinamide, on the other hand, is a form of vitamin B3 that has been shown to have a variety of beneficial effects on the skin. It works by improving the skin's barrier function, which helps to lock in moisture and protect the skin from environmental damage. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to reduce redness and swelling. Additionally, Niacinamide has been shown to reduce the production of sebum, a type of oil that can contribute to acne. This makes it a useful ingredient in the treatment of acne and other skin conditions characterized by excessive oil production.

The cream is dispensed in a pump mechanism, which allows for convenient and controlled application. This ensures that the correct amount of medication is applied to the skin, which can help to maximize the effectiveness of the treatment and minimize the risk of side effects. The cream is designed to be absorbed into the skin, which allows for localized treatment of the affected area.

Overuse or misuse of this medication can lead to side effects such as skin thinning, stretch marks, and skin discoloration. Therefore, it's important to follow the prescribed dosage and application instructions carefully.

If you have any questions about Clobetasol 17-Propionate/Niacinamide Topical Cream, or if you would like more information about how it works, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. Our team of knowledgeable compounding pharmacists is always here to help.

Other Uses

A small arrow pointing down

Clobetasol 17-Propionate 0.05%/Niacinamide 2% Topical Cream has versatile applications in dermatology. Beyond its primary usage, it can also be employed to manage other skin conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis, which is marked by red, scaly, and itchy rashes. Thanks to the combination of the strong anti-inflammatory and anti-pruritic activity of Clobetasol 17-Propionate and the skin-barrier enhancing and anti-inflammatory properties of Niacinamide, it can help to alleviate these symptoms significantly.

This formulation may also be usefully applied in the symptomatic management of skin symptoms associated with rosacea. Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder characterized by facial redness and sometimes pimples. Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on the skin and also has the potential to reduce the redness associated with rosacea. Furthermore, it is known to improve the barrier function of the skin, making this formulation a valuable adjunctive treatment in rosacea.

Other uses for this cream can extend to addressing hyperpigmentation issues. Niacinamide is known for its ability to even out skin tone and reduce the appearance of uneven pigmentation and age spots. Furthermore, Clobetasol propionate has modest depigmenting properties that can aid in managing hyperpigmentation disorders. Finally, Clobetasol can be useful in addressing some forms of alopecia due to its potent anti-inflammatory effects, although this use should be discussed with the prescribing dermatologist due to potential side effects.

Please bear in mind that while this formulation has versatile uses, its key constituents, Clobetasol 17-Propionate, a potent corticosteroid, and Niacinamide, do come with corresponding side effects. Regular continuous use of Clobetasol could lead to skin thinning (atrophy), while the Niacinamide might cause mild burning, itching, or redness of the skin. Patients and prescribers must be fully aware of these effects before deciding to use this formulation for other conditions. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have questions. Remember, our role at Bayview Pharmacy is not only to dispense medications, but also to ensure that the benefits of each formulation outweigh the potential risks for each unique patient.

What is the dosage form of this Clobetasol 17-Propionate 0.05%/Niacinamide 2% Topical Cream?

The dosage form of this medication is a semi-solid preparation, which is dispensed in a pump mechanism. This format is designed for convenient and controlled application directly on to the skin.

Should the cream be rubbed in or left to absorb on its own?

Normally, the cream should be applied and gently rubbed into the skin until it is fully absorbed. However, specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider should always be followed.

Is the cream suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes, often this compound formulation is well tolerated by most skin types. However, if you have very sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions, please consult with your healthcare provider before using.
